Chot Reyes to serve as Gilas head coach for Asia Cup


Chot Reyes will be the one calling the shots for Gilas Pilipinas in the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup which takes place from July 12 to 24 in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Reyes has been the head coach of the national team since February while also being the team’s program director.

The six-time PBA Coach of the Year went 1-1 in the Araneta window of the 2023 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers while steering the country to silver in the 31st Southeast Asian Games.

“The competition in Jakarta, Indonesia will be crucial to the continuing development of the younger players in preparation for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023,” read the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas’ statement.

In as assistant coaches are Nenad Vucinic, Jong Uichico, and Sandro Soriano.

Vucinic was the head coach of Gilas for the past month, leading Gilas to a 1-1 record in the third window of the Asian Qualifiers.

Reyes and JP Erram will leave the country on Monday.

TNT still has one more game left in the elimination round of the 2022 PBA Philippine Cup, going up against Ginebra on Sunday.

Gilas are grouped with India, New Zealand, and Lebanon in Group D of the continental cup.
