Soulemane Chabi Yo ended up being a one-and-done for University of Santo Tomas.
The 6-foot-6 Beninese student-athlete has decided to forego his final year with the Growling Tigers. Instead, he has signed with a Division 4 team in Spain, according to former UST head coach Aldin Ayo.
And when the 25-year-old Chabi Yo told UST about this offer, they let him go since it is for his personal growth.
“We are happy for Chabi,” Ayo told Tiebreaker Times. “From a displaced player in 2018, he was able to not only help us reach the UAAP Finals, but also make a name for himself.
“We are glad that we were able to help in his development.”
Back in 2018, Colegio de San Lorenzo disbanded its basketball team. That led Chabi Yo to UST.
Chabi Yo was already on the radar of international scouts during the 2019 NBA 5v5 Challenge in China, which saw the Growling Tigers finish in second place
In the UAAP, Chabi Yo dominated, averaging 17.44 points, 14.33 rebounds, and 1.39 assists per game. With Chabi Yo, the Growling Tigers finished second in the UAAP Season 82 tournament.
According to current UST head coach Jinino Manansala, Adama Faye will be the foreign student-athlete of the Growling Tigers come Season 84.
Faye is a former NU Bulldog who stands at 6-foot-8. He is a native of Senegal.
