After a historic run to the Finals in the NCAA Season 93 Women’s Volleyball Tournament, the San Beda University are looking at no less than another run to the title in Season 94.
On paper, the Lady Red Spikers look formidable, having lost just one player from last year’s roster in setter Rebecca Cuevas.
However, Cuevas’ void is hard to fill. And this year’s team captain Cesca Racraquin knows this is one of the challenges that San Beda need to overcome.
Aside from being their steady playmaker, Cuevas was San Beda’s game captain and main veteran. While transferee Lynne Matias can take on Cuevas’ setting duties, the 22-year-old Racraquin emphasizes the need for a leader on the court.
“Siguro itong season, nawala ‘yung main setter and heart siya ng team namin talaga. Para ma-adjust ‘yung void niya, kailangan namin mas mag-communicate pa sa court,” said the third-year Lady Red Spiker, who was key in San Beda’s thrilling win over Perpetual on opening day.
“Kailangan ko pang mas mag-lead. Kailangan ko pa mapakita ‘yung through my game, I guess. Ngayon kasi more on defense lang ‘yung na-contribute ko. So mahaba pa ‘yung time namin para makabawi.”
San Beda will face a stacked field en route to the Finals, which is why they’re sticking to age-old approach of taking the season one game at a time.
“Goal pa rin namin talaga is championship, pero hindi namin kami agad darating doon,” the 5-foot-7 spiker stressed.
“Kailangan isa-isahin namin bawat game, bawat kalaban.”
