Cawaling scores 48 as Hyperwash outlasts La Salle-Araneta in D-League’s highest-scoring game

Hyperwash rode JR Cawaling’s hot hands as it scored a 144-138 victory over skidding McDavid-La Salle Araneta Monday in the 2019 PBA D-League Second Conference at Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.

The former Smart Gilas forward unleashed a conference-best 48 points, to go with seven assists and three rebounds off the bench to guide the Vipers to back-to-back wins.

His scoring outburst is now the second-most in PBA D-League history, behind James Martinez’ 58 points for AMA Online Education in the 2016 Aspirants’ Cup.

Mac Montilla added a double-double with his 28 points and 12 rebounds, as Lord Casajeros unfurled 24 points, four boards, and two assists.

“Scoring-wise, vindicated kami kasi kung titingnan mo yung line up namin on paper, malakas siya eh,” said coach Joel Palapal as his side shot 55-percent from the field. “Ngayon, iwo-work namin yung depensa. Kasi yung binigay naming puntos, talagang mataas. Hopefully makabawi kami sa depensa sa next game.”

Jeric Fortuna quarterbacked Hyperwash with his 15 points, 10 assists, five steals, and four rebounds, while Arvie Bringas also had 15 points and eight boards in this high-scoring affair which smashed a number of PBA D-League records.

Hyperwash’s 144 points are the most points scored in a game, topping Tanduay’s previous mark in its 141-65 domination of Zark’s Burger back in the 2017 Foundation Cup.

The 138 points scored by McDavid-La Salle Araneta is also the most points for a losing team, eclipsing the previous high of 106, both set by Cagayan, in a 107-106 loss to Racal in the 2015 Foundation Cup, and Wangs, in a 110-106 defeat to Caida in the 2016 Aspirants’ Cup.

Both teams combining for 282 points also bested the previous high set in Racal’s 140-90 triumph over Zark’s Burger in the 2017 Foundation Cup.

More than anything, the Vipers boosted their chance of advancing to the quarterfinals with their even 2-2 slate, while keeping the Stallions winless through three games.

Nigerian big man Henry Iloka gave his all for McDavid-La Salle Araneta with 43 points, 26 rebounds, three assists, and two blocks.

Clark Bautista and James Mangahas both added 15 each in the defeat.

Hyperwash 144 — Cawaling 48, Montilla 28, Casajeros 24, Fortuna 15, Bringas 15, Dadjilul 8, Mirza 2, De Ocampo 2, Ferrer 2, Julkipli 0, Cariaga 0.
