Cariaso out as Ginebra coach, Racela no longer with team

A coaching overhaul expected to happen at the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel camp became official on Sunday as movements were already been made multiple sources told Tiebreaker Times.

Jeff Cariaso, who coached the Gin Kings for two conferences, is expected to be replaced on Monday during the team’s first practice session and a source privy to the matter said that Ato Agustin is likely to take over.

“Jeff is definitely out and although no official replacement has yet to be made, it looks like Coach Ato will be given another opportunity to call the shots,” said the source who refused to be identified.

Agustin coached the Gin Kings last season before he was replaced by Cariaso, former deputy of Tim Cone at Purefoods. Cariaso led the Gin Kings to the playoffs in each of the two conferences he handled the squad, but his team couldn’t reach the Final Four despite having a star-studded line up.

Another source also disclosed that Olsen Racela, who was brought into the Gin Kings camp along with Cariaso said that the former San Miguel Beer coach is also no longer with Ginebra. Both Cariaso and Racela were members Tim Cone’s the coaching staff and were part of the squad that won three championships. They had a chance to be part of the grand slam team until they were assigned to the Gin Kings in last season’s Governors’ Cup.
