Did UP break protocol during Akhuetie’s ‘shootaround’ in Cavite? Coach Bo says no

With University of Santo Tomas and National University under investigation by the Joint Administrative Order group, social media has been buzzing about varsity teams who should be investigated as well.

And one of those squads is University of the Philippines’ Men’s Basketball Team.

Netizens raised inquiries about an Instagram story posted by UAAP Season 81 Most Valuable Player Bright Akhuetie doing a shootaround in a court in Silang, Cavite last August 1.

On August 1, UP secured the commitment of Carl Tamayo and Gerry Abadiano, which also took place in Cavite. In attendance were Perasol, No Where to Go but UP chief Atty. Agaton Uvero, and Ricci Rivero.

Cavite was under General Community Quarantine.

Word around the grapevine shared that the team held a training camp there, but Perasol said that wasn’t the case.

“Nag-shootaround kami sa court namin, pero kami lang ni Bright,” said Perasol, as Akhuetie spent the night in their house.

Under the current protocols, non-professional athletes cannot train under the supervision of a coach. Perasol said that he was not coaching Akhuetie, but was just serving as a “ballboy”.

“Ako at pamangkin ko ang kasama para may tiga-pulot kami ng bola.”

Perasol also insisted that Rivero, Tamayo, and Abadiano were not present in the basketball gym.
