An era in Letran basketball ended on Sunday.
Bonnie Tan has formally passed the head coaching reins to Rensy Bajar.
Tan, 50, will now be the full-time head coach of Northport in the Philippine Basketball Association.
Grateful is Tan for the four years he spent in Intramuros that saw him steer the Knights to three straight championships — including a sweep of NCAA Season 97.
“I’m grateful for the opportunities that Letran has afforded me,” he said in a statement. Tan will still help build Bajar’s program.
“I’m deeply appreciative of how the community has welcomed me since I came on board and being considered as an honorary Letranite will always be one of the biggest achievements I could ever receive.”
After replacing Jeff Napa after NCAA Season 94, Tan, a product of University of Santo Tomas, compiled a 34-11 elimination round slate in Letran and 10-2 in the playoffs.
He was named interim head coach of the Batang Pier after NCAA Season 98, replacing Pido Jarencio, who moved to UST.
In his first conference with Northport, he guided the squad to a 3-8 record.
Now, Bajar will take charge of the Knights.
“Coach Rensy has been with us during the three-peat era and I’m confident that he can sustain the winning culture that we have built with the Knights,” said Tan.
Bajar, a product of San Beda, has been with Tan’s staff since 2019.
Bajar is also the head coach of Diliman College, guiding the Blue Dragons to two UCBL crowns.
This will also mark the end of San Miguel Corporation’s stay in Letran.
The new booster of the Knights will be unveiled on Monday.
