University of Perpetual Help System DALTA needed to come back from two sets down to upend the upset-seeking Mapua University in five sets, 20-25, 24-26, 25-18, 25-12, 15-6, in the NCAA Season 95 Women’s Volleyball action, Friday at the FilOil Flying V Centre.
Former skipper Yanca Tripoli was instrumental in that comeback as she produced 20 points, all coming from attacks, most of which came in that crucial third set.
Head coach Macky Carino shared that he made the Lady Altas realize the urgency of getting this win.
He said, “Medyo madedelikado talaga tayo. Kasi ito yung mga teams na pwede nating lamangan talaga at manalo para makapasok ng semis.”
Fortunately, his wards responded and peppered the Lady Cardinals with most of their 60 attacks coming the dominant fourth and deciding sets. They also limited their errors to 29 despite the match going the full route.
“Tignan mo nung third, fourth, fifth, dun pa lang lumabas yung laro ng team, yung gel, yung combination attack andoon na. Yung nawala ba ng tension sa katawan,” Carino felt relieved.
Converted setter and current team captain Jenny Gaviola steered the Lady Altas’ offense with 16 excellent tosses, while Allysa Sangalang anchored the floor defense on 19 digs and 16 excellent receptions.
This is Perpetual’s third straight win to go up to 3-1.
Lorraine Barrias ended the contest with 15 markers and 11 digs for Mapua, but her squad’s errors, especially in the final set, sealed their doom.
Mapua, who is coming off a win versus EAC four days ago, fell to 1-2.
Perpetual will next face Jose Rizal University (1-2) on Monday, January 27 at 2 p.m. Mapua will try to get back at the win column against Letran (1-2) on Wednesday, January 29 at 2 p.m.
