Defending men’s beach volleyball champions National University finally pull together after a rocky opening weekend, overpowering the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Spikers in two sets, 21-19, and 21-14.
Joseph Tipay and Edwin Tolentino escaped a fiery rally by Katipunan spikers Ysay Marasigan and Jery Apelar in the first set, 21-19, to open their day. Apelar and Marasigan however would lose steam in the second set, giving up points to errors and outs. Capitalizing on faulty blocking from the hosts University of the East Red Warriors, the defending champions National University Bulldogs cruised to their third win, after catching their opponents flat-footed to take a two set win, 21-15, and 21-13.
The veteran duo of reigning MVP Edwin Tolentino and Josephenry Tipay turned back the hard hitting services of UE’s Edward Composano and Carlo Almario, closing out the first set in a mere fifteen minutes. Though Composano and Almario would return in the second set barring the same level of ferocity, the NU would take control of the game’s flow, forcing their opponents to error after error while making sure to score on the attack. With the Warriors unable to find a way to wrest control of the game away from their opponents, the defending champions would close out the day with another game under the win column.
