Bea Tan-Dij Rodriguez duo, Doromal sisters take early lead in BVR: Puerto Galera

The battle-tested duos of Bea Tan and Dij Rodriguez, and sisters Roma Joy and Roma Mae Doromal are the remaining undefeated teams in the women’s division of the BVR on Tour Amazing Puerto Galera Dreamwave Open Saturday at the Dreamwave White Beach here.

Tan and Rodriguez made quick work of University of Santo Tomas’ Mer Jauculan and Derie Virtusio, 21-11, 21-7, before returning in the afternoon session with a 21-13, 21-9 romp of the other UST women’s pair of Cara Rosales and MJ Eb

Not to be outdone were the Doromals, who swept Air Force’s Angel Antipuesto and Mikaela Andres, 21-10, 21-11, as well as May Ann Pantino and Jossa Cabalsa, 22-20, 21-17.

In the men’s division, the Visayan tandem Kevin Juban and Raphy Abanto also rose to 2-0 following a 21-17, 21-16 conquest of UST’s Rancel Varga and Ef Dimaculangan.

Ranran Abdilla and Jessie Lopez, the December Open men’s division champions, also had a smashing start. The Air Force duo scored a 21-18, 21-13 victory over National University’s Edward Camposano and James Buytrago.

But KR Guzman and Krung Arbasto, who ruled the Dumaguete leg last November, fell ambush to Varga and Dimaculangan, 21-15, 18-21, 15-13.

A competitive field of 10 women’s and men’s teams will slug it out for the championship

The famed Occidental Mindoro resort town also hosted the event in January last year, with the women’s pair of Bea Tan and Charo Soriano, and the men’s duo of Jade Becaldo and Calvin Sarte ruling the leg.

“Natutuwa ang mga bata kasi nakakakuha sila ng techniques mula sa inyo,” said Puerto Galera Vice Mayor Marlon Lopez, representing Mayor Rocky Ilagan, during the opening ceremony. “This (BVR on Tour) is one way of promoting tourism in Puerto Galera.”

Administrator Venancio Yap hopes that the famed Oriental Mindoro resort town will be a yearly regular stop in the four-year-old beach volleyball circuit.
