Dwight Ramos and Toyama continued their giant-slaying ways in the 2021-22 B.League season, scoring a 93-87 stunner over Mikawa, Saturday at Wing Arena Kariya.
Down 73-66 early in the final frame, back-to-back treys by Tomokazu Abe and Julian Mavunga sparked a 9-0 spurt to gain the lead.
It was a nip-and-tuck affair from there as the Grouses and Seahorses exchanged leads.
Facing an 81-78 deficit midway, Joshua Smith and Toyama went on another rally. They scored eight straight points to gain the lead for good.
A trey by Yudai Nishida then cut the Grouses lead to one. But Smith, Nauki Uto, and Mavunga drilled backbreaking buckets to lift Toyama to an 11-18 record.
Ramos played 19 minutes in the game, finishing with five points, one rebound, and an assist.
Former Meralco import Smith had a dominant performance, scoring 26 points on 11-of-13 shooting from the field with nine rebounds, two steals, and a block.
Bryce Johnson got himself a double-double as well with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Mavunga and Uto added 17 points and seven rebounds and 16 points and seven assists, respectively.
Mikawa, meanwhile, fell to 14-13.
Davante Gardner paced the Seahorses with 20 points. Ryogo Sumino and Jarrod Uthoff added 16 and 14 points, respectively.
Toyama looks to complete a sweep tomorrow.
