Ateneo’s Jay-M Leal suspended one game for two unsportsmanlike fouls

Ateneo de Manila University’s Jay-M Leal has been handed a one-game suspension after accumulating two unsportsmanlike fouls in the UAAP Season 89 Collegiate Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Leal will serve his suspension on Saturday, October 24, when Ateneo hosts Far Eastern University at the Blue Eagle Gym.

His second unsportsmanlike foul occurred with 23 seconds remaining in the second quarter of Ateneo’s game against University of Santo Tomas on October 17.

As both teams fought for rebounding position, Leal forcefully swung his left elbow toward the neck and chest area of UST’s Ice Danting.

The foul was not called by the game officials during the contest. However, the Commissioner’s Office reviewed the incident and imposed the appropriate disciplinary sanction under the UAAP House Rules and applicable FIBA regulations.

Leal had previously incurred an unsportsmanlike foul during Ateneo’s October 10 game against FEU.

With 1:07 left in the fourth quarter, Leal swung his right hand downward toward the face and shoulder of FEU’s Rojan Montemayor as the latter drove to the basket, without making a legitimate attempt to play the ball.

The incident was initially called a personal foul before being upgraded to an unsportsmanlike foul.

Leal has appeared in all seven games of the Blue Eagles in the first round, averaging 2.29 points and 2.86 rebounds per game.
