Ateneo secures Final Four berth, eliminates UST in injury-marred tilt


In a crucial matchup that decided the Final Four for this year’s UAAP Women’s Badminton Championship, both the Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles and University of Santo Tomas Golden Shuttlers fought through injuries. But in the end it was the Ateneo Lady Eagles towering over the UST Lady Shuttlers on October 3 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium with a score of 4-1.

Cassie Lim of ADMU matched up against UST’s Sugar Vizmonte in the first singles match where Lim won by default due to Vizmonte’s knee injury. The left knee injury of Vizmonte was said to be a recurring injury according to her captain Pat Barredo and no prognosis has yet to be released as of publishing.

Though it started out appalling, the UST bounced back aggressively in the second singles match. However it was not enough to succumb the Katipunan-based squad as Bianca Carlos snatched the win against UST’s Airish Macalino, 21-7 and 21-10, giving Ateneo a 2-0 match lead entering the first doubles match which was more intense. As Ateneo’s Geva De Vera and Janel Dihiansan rallied against Kristine Gaspar and Anna Barredo, they struggled a bit but continued to outplayed their opponents, 21-10 and 26-24. In the fourth match Ateneo overpowered UST in a two –set victory, 21-19 and 21-17, as Bianca Carlos and Cassie Lim of Ateneo win against the Steffi Aquino – Airish Macalino pair.

Despite the loss of ADMU Lady Eagle Trixie Malibiran in the last singles match game by default due to her injured hamstring, the Lady Eagles are assured of a Final Four slot.

Although it wasn’t a clean slate for the Blue and White squad, head coach Kennie Asuncion is still determined to win the next games of the team in this tourney. Asked if Malibiran will be able to play for the next game, head coach Asuncion said, “It depends, I don’t want to let her play if she’s not well, we’ll just have to strategize if ever.” She adds, “UP is our next contender, it will be a game that we will enjoy.” Keeping their confidence as they battle out next with the team to beat this season.
