Ateneo-UP headlines UAAP 84 opening day


For the first time since November 20, 2019, the UAAP Men’s Basketball Tournament is finally returning amidst the improving condition of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

With four matches a day every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, fans will be spoiled. Each game day showcases all of the eight schools in the competition in the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

Games in the first round will still take place in a closed-door setting, though.

Hosted by De La Salle University, Season 84 will formally commence on March 26, Saturday. And it kicks off with the headline match between defending champion Ateneo and Season 81 runners-up University of the Philippines at 4:00 PM.

On opening day, Jinino Manansala will make his University of Santo Tomas debut against Olsen Racela’s Far Eastern University at 10:00AM.

Also making their debuts for Adamson University and National University are Nash Racela and Jeff Napa, respectively, at 1:00PM.

To close out opening day, Derrick Pumaren will officially mark his return to La Salle by welcoming Jack Santiago and University of the East at 7:00PM.

The rivalry game between Ateneo versus La Salle shall take place on April 2, Saturday, with tip-off scheduled at 7:00 PM.

Meanwhile, the UAAP Season 82 Finals rematch between Ateneo and UST will happen on April 9, Saturday at 4:00 PM.

Powerhouse squads La Salle and UP will face off on Tuesday, April 5 at 10:00 AM while Olsen’s FEU and Nash’s Adamson square off on April 7, Thursday at 7:00 PM.

The Season 84 Men’s Basketball Tournament will still be a double round robin and will follow the Final Four format for its postseason.
