Ateneo Hall of Famer Arben Santos, 76, passes away

Ateneo de Manila University is mourning the loss of one of its most loyal soldiers, Arsenio Benjamin “Arben” Santos (November 13, 1947 – July 20, 2024), who passed away on Saturday morning at the age of 76.

Santos was an integral part of the Blue Eagles during their time in the NCAA in the mid-1960s, excelling as a two-sport athlete in basketball and football.

He helped lead the Blue Eagles to victory, securing the NCAA Seniors Football title in 1968.

This period marked the “Old Timer Six” era of the Grand Old League, where Ateneo, along with Letran, La Salle, San Beda, Mapua, and JRC composed the competition.

Beyond his athletic achievements, Santos was a businessman who played a pivotal role in the recruitment for Ateneo.

His keen eye for talent and unwavering support were instrumental in discovering and nurturing the careers of Blue Eagles such as LA Tenorio, Enrico Villanueva, Kai Sotto, Angelo Kouame, SJ Belangel, William Navarro, and Kemark Carino, among others.

His significant contributions to the school’s sports programs earned him a rightful place in the Ateneo Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.

The wake for Arben Santos will be held from July 21-23 at The Heritage Memorial Park.

The funeral mass will take place on July 24 at 2:00PM.

Ateneo de Manila University, along with his family, friends, and the countless individuals whose lives he touched, grieve the loss of a true Blue Eagle.

His spirit and contributions will forever be remembered.
