Ateneo de Davao quartet moves to DLSZ after tragic loss of Baterbonia

Following the tragic passing of their close friend Rene Baterbonia in a drowning incident during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora on June 8, the Ateneo de Davao quartet of Matt Cayetano, JM Sanoria, Macky Pelegrino, and team captain Rhysus Bajenting have decided to move out of Ateneo de Manila University and continue their journey elsewhere.

Blue Knights head coach Jess Evangelio confirmed the development on Saturday, revealing that the four players will instead suit up for De La Salle-Zobel.

“It is with great pride and gratitude that I finally confirm that our boys will be joining De La Salle Zobel as they begin an exciting new chapter in their basketball and academic journey,” Evangelio said in his announcement.

“We are truly thankful to De La Salle Zobel for opening its doors and providing them with the opportunity to grow not only as athletes, but also as students and young men of character. Your trust and belief in their potential mean so much to all of us.”

Cayetano, a 6-foot guard, Sanoria, a 6-foot-2 winger, Pelegrino, a 5-foot-10 floor general, and Bajenting, a 5-foot-6 playmaker, were initially set to continue their high school careers at Ateneo de Manila University under the program of coach Bacon Austria.

They will now begin a new chapter under coach Gian Nazario starting in UAAP Season 89.

“We do not take this opportunity lightly. Our boys are committed to working hard, staying humble, and representing the Lasallian community with pride, discipline, and integrity both on and off the court,” Evangelio added, also expressing gratitude to Anton Brodett of Phenom Sports Management for guiding the decision-making process.

“A special thank you to Coach Gian Nazario for believing in them and for playing a significant role in helping shape their future. We are honored to entrust our boys to your program.”
