Ateneo de Manila University averted disaster in its 2024 Shakey’s Super League Pre-Season Championship opener, clawing back from a two-set deficit to defeat San Beda University, 22-25, 20-25, 25-21, 25-21, 15-7, at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila.
The Blue Eagles dominated the decisive fifth set, jumping to an early 9-2 lead behind strong performances from Zel Tsunashima, Lyann De Guzman, and AC Miner.
San Beda managed to close the gap to 9-5 with a three-point run, but Ateneo quickly regained control with a 3-0 surge of their own, pushing the score to 12-5.
Despite a spirited effort by San Beda, Ateneo’s relentless offense proved too much to handle. The match ended with an off-the-block kill by Yvana Sulit, sealing the win for the Blue Eagles.
“Sabi nga ni coach (Sergio Veloso), hindi pa natatapos yung laro sa two sets, may three sets pa kami na puwedeng kunin,” said De Guzman. “Strong mind lang at following his system.”
San Beda had taken control early in the match, winning the first two sets by capitalizing on Ateneo’s shaky defense.
The Lady Red Spikers, led by Angel Mae Habacon and Rianne Bedural, overwhelmed the Blue Eagles with a barrage of aces and quick attacks, securing the first set 25-22 and the second 25-20.
However, Ateneo started to mount their comeback in the third set, powered by key strikes from Jlo Delos Santos and Tsunashima.
Setter Taks Fujimoto also played a crucial role, orchestrating the offense and scoring a timely tip at the back corner to clinch the third set, 25-21.
With renewed momentum, Ateneo maintained their edge in the fourth set, fending off a San Beda rally to win 25-21 and force a deciding fifth set.
De Guzman led Ateneo with 17 points, including 14 from attacks, two from service aces, and one block.
Delos Santos and Tsunashima added 12 and 11 points, respectively, providing crucial support in Ateneo’s comeback.
Earlier, Lyceum defeated Mapua in a five-set thriller, 25-9, 19-25, 20-25, 26-24, 15-12.
Johna Dolorito led the Lady Pirates with 20 points, bouncing back from a previous loss to the UE Lady Warriors.
Alyanna Ong topped the Lady Cardinals with 21 points while NCAA Season 99 Rookie of the Year Habacon, delivered 14 points in the Lady Red Spikers’ losing effort.
