While the probability remains low, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) is fully prepared to host additional games during the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023.
This readiness is in response to Japan’s ongoing monsoon season.
Certainly, Plan A is still Okinawa hosting the Group E and F games.
However, should a storm occur from August 25 until the conclusion of the group phase, the games originally designated for Japan will be shifted to the Philippines.
“Many typhoons also pass through Okinawa. And they have communicated to us that in the worst-case scenario, if they are unable to hold the games in Okinawa, they will relocate the two groups to the Philippines,” stated Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas President Al Panlilio during the special PSA forum held at the Meralco compound.
Slated in Group E are Germany, Finland, Australia, and co-host Japan. Meanwhile, Group F includes Slovenia, Cape Verde, Georgia, and Venezuela.
According to FIBA WC 2023 Deputy Event Director Erika Dy, in the event of a relocation, the Smart Araneta and Mall of Asia venues will host a quadruple-header, extending their games into the morning session.
“We will utilize both venues. This is a worst-case scenario, but we are prepared,” Dy stated.
