One shining moment
Arellano University upsets the San Beda Red Lions for NCAA first final four berth in school history (October 4, 2014)
The Arellano University, in its five seasons in the NCAA, has always been a bottom-to-middle tier team in the NCAA. Going into this Saturday game against the San Beda College Red Lions, the two teams were first and second at the standings.
The game was close all throughout. SBC led 17-16 to end the first quarter, AU then stormed back in the second and gain a 39-32 lead, and SBC regained the lead to end the 3rd with a 58-55 lead.
With 9 seconds left on the clock and the game tied at 76-all, it was Ralph Salcedo who scored his only two points in the game with a driving layup that eventually became the game winner for the Chiefs.
The Arellano University has finally demolished the final four-wall in emphatic fashion. They eventually lost to the Red Lions in the finals but after five seasons, not only did they make their NCAA Final Four debut, they made it to the finals.
Who’s in, who’s out
The Arellano University Chiefs lost two players to the PBA. They are not just any two players but two starters in Prince Caperal and John Pinto. Here’s the stats the team lost based on their NCAA season averages:
The Chiefs still have Dioncee Holts, super scorer Keith Agovida, and Jiovani Jalalon in their team but it would be hard for the team to make-up with the loss of their playmaker John Pinto and bruiser Prince Caperal. The Chiefs are looking to line-up two players from their Team B to replace the two.
Player(s) to watch
It’s hard to pick just one player to feature in this section for the Chiefs. So we’ll cheat and pick two!
Jiovani Jalalon and Dioncee Holts
These two Chiefs almost broke in the mythical five team ranking 6th and 7th IN statistical points respectively. Here are the stats of Jalalon and Holts for the 90th season of the NCAA:
Pinto and Holts produced unreal statistics for the Chiefs this season.
Jiovani Jalalon was lights-out during the season. However, the only knock to his game is the lack of an outside shot. He was an abysmal 13% from downtown. Moreover, without backcourt buddy John Pinto, Jalalon is the sole playmaker in the starting and closing line-up for the Chiefs.
Dioncee Holts is an anomaly, a freaking stretch 5 that stretches the floor and drives defenses crazy. We forgot to mention in the stats above that Holts made 45% of his 3 point attempts. That’s crazy! And for a big man, he makes 77% of his free throws.
Yes, the Arellano University Chiefs have a potent offense but the problem is on defense. They allowed a league high 82.89 points per game for the season. The Chiefs will outscore you but the problem is they’ll face off against deep teams like the FEU Tamaraws, SBC Red Lions, and the SWU Cobras that could run in their pace. Plus, the loss of John Pinto is a huge blow to the team.
