Angge Poyos vows to stay grounded amid record-breaking rookie season

Angge Poyos vowed to stay grounded after breaking another record in her stellar rookie campaign for University of Sto. Tomas in the UAAP Season 86 Women’s Volleyball Tournament.

Poyos achieved the highest point total for a first-year player after scoring 25 points in the Golden Tigresses’ straight-set win over the University of the East, bringing her tally to a whopping total of 268 with still one game left in UST’s elimination round schedule.

The 20-year-old outside hitter from Balilihan, Bohol, surpassed Faith Nisperos’ 267-point tally in Season 84 with Ateneo.UAAP-86-WVB-UST-vs.-UE-Abellana-Poyos-Jurado-Plaza Angge Poyos vows to stay grounded amid record-breaking rookie season News UAAP UST Volleyball - philippine sports news

“Para sa akin overwhelming kasi nga as a rookie, nagagawa ko ‘yung mga ganung record. Sa sarili ko, I will always keep my feet firm on the ground,” said Poyos after the win over the Lady Warriors.

Poyos also holds the record for the most points by a rookie in a single game after scoring 31 points in the Golden Tigresses’ four-set, 22-25, 25-20, 26-24, 25-23 win over Adamson University in the second round.

The 5-foot-8 outside spiker admitted that she did not expect to reach such a feat, but she promised to use this as motivation moving forward, particularly in their upcoming match against De La Salle University on Saturday.

UST’s game against the Lady Spikers will likely determine if they will secure a twice-to-beat incentive in the Season 86 Final Four.

“Hindi ko inaasahan na aabot ako sa ganoong points, pero masaya ako na ayun nga, nagkaroon ako ng record. Hindi pa naman tapos, kaya kailangan ko pang mag-perform sa mga susunod pang laro,” she said.

“Syempre malaking motivation lalo na ngayon na nakabalik na ako, nagka-dehydration nga ako nung huli. One hundred percent na ulit ako ngayon kaya handa na ulit ako, paghahandaan ko ang La Salle,” added Poyos, who missed their second-round matchup against University of the Philippines.
