Angge Poyos aims for all-around excellence beyond scoring

Angge Poyos had a remarkable performance against Ateneo de Manila University, pouring a personal-best 26 points in a commanding straight-sets victory that concluded in just 89 minutes on Saturday afternoon.

The astounding performance reset her career-high in points, surpassing the 24 points she tallied against University of the East last February 21.

The 20-year-old rookie made her 26 points in a variety of ways, getting 21 from spikes, three from service aces, and two from blocks.

Her scoring exploits saw her make 86 points as of last Wednesday, the second-most in the league just next to Casiey Dongallo.

However, the 5-foot-8 open spiker is not contented with being just a scorer. She wanted to be an all-around threat.

“For me, siguro marami pa akong need iimprove lalo na sa pasa, yung sinasabi ni coach na yung pasa need ko pa ii-mprove and sisimulan yan sa training,” said Poyos after their 25-19, 25-16, 25-19 win at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

“With the help naman ng mga coaches, magagawa ko yan.”

UAAP86-WVB-Angge-Poyos-9299 Angge Poyos aims for all-around excellence beyond scoring News PVL Volleyball - philippine sports newsAs of March 6, Poyos is part of the league-leaders in all scoring categories.

She was first in spiking with a 42.20 percent success rate, eighth in blocks with 0.47 per set, and seventh in service with 0.29 aces per frame.

But in the defensive categories of digging and receiving, she was not in the top 10 in the league.

Poyos also showed her commitment to the team by shrugging off her career-best performance, saying those personal numbers do not mean as much as the team’s record.

“Ang mindset ko is maglaro lang at mag-contribute sa team, yun ang pinakaimportante,” said Poyos, who is on a race for the Rookie of the Year with Dongallo.

“Hindi naman importante yung individual performance basta iniisip ko lang na makapag-contribute sa offense and defense.”

The Golden Tigresses are enjoying their best start in 14 years or since they opened Season 73 with six straight victories, and Poyos has been an integral part of that.

And for them to match that start in Season 73 on Wednesday against University of the Philippines and even surpass that later on, Poyos knows that there should be no let up.

“Consistency saka yung focus at wag magkampante at magrelax kasi mahaba pa yung liga at alam kong mas marami pa kaming maipapakita,” she said on what needs to be done to preserve their streak.
