The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas has officially appointed Alfrancis Chua as the program director and team manager for both the Gilas Pilipinas Boys’ and Men’s teams.
“I am very happy that Alfrancis is back with Gilas,” said SBP President Al Panlilio.
“I work well with him, and our only objective is to elevate Philippine basketball. The SBP also extends our appreciation to San Miguel Corporation (SMC) Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Ramon Ang for supporting this decision to have Alfrancis help the program again.”
Chua also serves as SMC sports director, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel governor, PBA vice chairman, and UST special assistant to the rector for sports.
He now adds this responsibility to an already distinguished career.
Since taking charge of SMC’s basketball operations in 2015, Chua has guided the conglomerate’s teams – Ginebra, San Miguel Beer, and Magnolia – to a combined 15 PBA championships.
He has been recognized as the PBA Executive of the Year in 2018, 2021, and 2024.
His return to Gilas Pilipinas comes with high expectations, especially following his pivotal role as Team Manager during the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games.
Under his leadership, the Philippines clinched its first basketball gold medal in 61 years, marking a historic moment for the sport in the country.
“It was great having him on the bench motivating the players. He is such a great motivator,” said Gilas Pilipinas Men head coach Tim Cone.
“That’s one of the things that we hope to enhance the program with his presence. He has always been there for me to consult with and talk with. And of course, we had that great run in the Asian Games, which was fantastic.”
Chua’s responsibilities with Gilas begin immediately, as he is set to join the team for the second window of the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers. The national squad faces New Zealand on November 21 and Hong Kong on November 24.
“I’m happy I’ll be able to help Gilas in this capacity,” said Chua.
“I thank boss RSA (Ramon S. Ang) for giving me his blessing in taking this new role, and I look forward to working with Coach Tim and LA (Tenorio).”
With Chua’s extensive experience and track record of success, the SBP is optimistic that his leadership will help the national program reach new heights.
