San Miguel Corporation is going all out in its support for Gilas Pilipinas’ FIBA World Cup campaign.
After allowing Ginebra head coach Tim Cone to be part of the national team’s coaching staff, it has also allowed its sports director Alfrancis Chua to be an executive advisor to both the national team and the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas.
Philippine Basketball Association commissioner Willie Marcial made the announcement during the halftime of Magnolia’s semifinals clash against TNT on Wednesday.
“Ni-nominate si Alfrancis Chua as executive advisor to Gilas and SBP. Papayagan naman siya ni Boss RSA [Ramon S. Ang] pero sapalagay ko papayagan naman siya nun,” said Marcial.
The nomination and acceptance of the position were accepted by Chua last August 1 during the SBP’s stakeholders meeting in Makati.
In fact, Chua has already laid out one of his plans for Gilas — to start having a once-a-week training every Monday.
“Malaki yung role niya sa SBP. Siya kakausap sa player. Yung practice gusto nga niya every Monday na e,” he said.
“Sabi ko nga, kailangan mag-gel e. Kung ilang araw mo lang bubuuin, wala rin. Kailangan talaga may chemistry.”
Chua is also the governor of Ginebra San Miguel and a sports official at Colegio de San Juan de Letran.
