ILOILO CITY — Aiza Maizo-Pontillas starred as Petro Gazz officially made its entry to the semifinals by taking down Chery Tiggo in the final stretch of the 2023 Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference on Tuesday.
Maizo-Pontillas finished with 13 points to power the Angels’ 25-21, 28-26, 25-21 sweep of the Crossovers at the University of San Agustin Gymnasium here.
The Angels clinched the second seed with a 6-2 win-loss standing.
But what made the win even more special for the 35-year-old Passi, Iloilo native is that she was able to do all of that in front of her fellow Ilonggos.
“Masaya dahil dito sa hometown ko ginawa yung PVL and lahat naman nag-enjoy. Hindi lang ang fans nag-enjoy maski ang players din,” said Maizo-Pontillas during the PVL official broadcast.
Petro Gazz looked poised to take a dominant sweep but the Crossovers fought back, especially in the third and fourth sets. That saw them erase seven-point deficits in both sets before eventually losing in the end.
Helping out Maizo-Pontillas are Remy Palma, MJ Phillips, and Grethcel Soltones, who all scored in double digits against the Angels.
Soltones scored 14 points on 10 attacks, three aces, and a block while Remy Palma and Phillips added 12 and 10 points respectively.
With the playoffs already on the horizon, Maizo-Pontillas and the rest of the Crossovers
