LIPA CITY, BATANGAS—Go for Gold-Air Force punched its ticket to the semifinals after sweeping Basilan, 25-15, 28-26, 25-20 in the PNVF Champions League, Tuesday at the Aquamarine Recreational Center here.
John Vic De Guzman spearheaded the victory with a game-high 17 points off 14 attacks and three aces.
With the win over the Steel Spikers, the Aguilas ended the group stage with a 2-0 record. They also have the best record in Pool A.
“Naging maganda yung performance namin ngayong araw. Medyo tumaas ‘yung porsyento namin sa service at receive kaya ‘yung plano namin sa loob, nagawa namin,” said Air Force head coach Dante Alinsunurin.
De Guzman scored the finishing blow in the third set off a set from Kim Dayandante in the third set.
Mark Alfafara provided 13 points for the Aguilas along with seven excellent receptions and three digs. Meanwhile, Francis Saura bounced back from a rough debut with nine markers.
Air Force libero Ricky Marcos had 17 receptions and 11 digs. Veteran setter Jessie Lopez finished with 13 excellent sets to go along with two points.
Basilan, who went down to 0-1, will look to secure the final semis spot in Pool A against VNS.
No player from the Steel Spikers reached double figures in scoring, with Esmail Kasim and Mohammad Solayman collecting nine markers each.
Go for Gold-Air Force will go up against the second-ranked team from Pool B on Friday at 1:30 PM. Meanwhile, the Basilan-VNS showdown will be tomorrow at 1:30 PM.
