It was a long day for the Ateneo Blue Jins. This was their 3rd series for the day, first two against perennial contenders DLSU and NU. The Blue Jins would make one last push in beating the UP Maroons to go into Day 2 with some sort of momentum.
Last year’s UAAP Flyweight Champion Justin de Leon seemed to not find his footing in his new weight division as he would go 0-3 for the day, including a loss to UP’s Rannie Mercado 8-5. Current Ateneo Flyweight Radley Dizon successfully evaded all but 2 of Juztin Castillo’s kicks in a 6-2 win. In a turn of events for Josiah Cabanag in the bantamweight match of the series, Cabanag would go up 16-14 over ADMU’s Aydin Cortez. With about 50 seconds to go however, Cortez successfully knocked down Cabanag to incur his 8th kyonggo and a Cortez-win. Elusive Marc Frigillana would again give the blue-side another match win this time in a methodical 3-1 win over Sean Rodriguez. Joel Alejandro scored 10 points, 8 accounting for successful connections, in a decisive 10-5 victory over Karlos Gaerlan to give ADMU its first win of the season. Heavyweight jin Guillano de Dios vented out his frustration with a 14-2 victory over Jeff Ong in a match that has implications in the weight division rankings.
