Despite falling short of the UAAP Season 84 Cheerdance Competition championship, first runner-up Adamson Pep Squad still delivered a flawless performance.
And that’s backed by numbers.
Among the eight teams, only the champion FEU Cheering Squad and Adamson accrued no penalties and deductions.
“Sobrang fulfilled kami kasi hindi biro ‘yung pinagdaanan ng lahat ng teams,” said Adamson head coach Jam Lorenzo in the post-competition interview.
“It’s really really difficult for us to pull off a three-minute routine with the same rules and talagang ang hirap tapatan yung last season on how you could compress it to three minutes with the same quality.”
But despite the challenges of the pandemic-tweaked CDC, Adamson came through with a cowboy-themed routine to the delight of the 12,522-strong crowd inside the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
In the categories, Adamson placed third in all but one – the dance department, getting 353 points just behind FEU at 361.5.
Fourth place UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe scored 341 in dance while second runner-up NU Pep Squad had 339.5.
NU Pep Squad were better than Adamson in tumbling (86-84), stunts (89-85), tosses (86.5-82.5), and pyramids (86-84).
But Adamson’s spotless performance came to play as NU received six penalties and deductions in its scorecard, third-worst in the eight-squad field.
“Sobrang saya po ng puso namin kasi talagang ini-aim po namin na buo ‘yung routine then si Lord na bahala sa kung anong mangyayari sa amin,” said Marc Laurence Navarro, the all smiles team captain of Adamson.
When the dust all settled and the dance floor was cleared, FEU came away with the title with 727.5 points while Adamson came second at 688.5 points, 7.5 points better than NU.
But there’s no regret for Adamson as they felt at peace with what it was able to show in the compressed CDC performance.
“I’m really proud to say na we came up with innovative pyramids kahit hindi man ganon sobrang ka-difficult, we still managed to give an identity to the UAAP CDC and sobrang proud kami,” said Lorenzo.
