Acaylar confident Altas can take repeat

University of Perpetual Help System-DALTA Altas seek to keep its domination of men’s volleyball as it starts its campaign against St. Benilde on Wednesday in the 92nd Season of the NCAA volleyball tournament at Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan City.

The Altas came from behind to beat the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals and claim last year’s championship and are expected to go all out this season to snare their second straight crown, fifth in the last six years and 11th overall.

The Las Pinas-based spikers will be parading an almost intact line up headed by the Taneo brothers, Rey, Jr. and Relan, Randean Abcede, Warren Catipay, Esmail Kasim and Allan Jay Salaan.

Of last year’s triumphant squad, only Bonjomar Castel and Neil Barry Ytorzaita have left, making the Altas a favorite to repeat.

“We’re confident of our chances to repeat this year,” said Perpetual Help coach Sammy Acaylar.

The Perpetual Help-Saint Benilde duel is set at 11:30 a.m.

Other men’s games will pit Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates against the Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights at 8:30 am, JRU with Mapua at 10:00 am, San Sebastian with Arellano University at 1:00 pm and San Beda with EAC at 2:30 pm.

The women’s side, for its part, will open tomorrow with defending champion Saint Benilde battling Perpetual Help at 2 p.m.

Also schedule on that day are LPU versus Letran at 9 am, Jose Rizal against Mapua at 10:30 am, San Sebastian versus Arellano U at 3:30 pm and San Beda against EAC at 5 pm.
