UP recovers from first loss, sweeps San Sebastian

Following a heated loss last Sunday to the UST Golden Tigresses, the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons made short work of the San Sebastian College-Recoletos Lady Stags, 25-15, 25-13, 25-16, for their second win in the Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

The Lady Maroons out-performed the much younger Lady Stags in each scoring skull, most notably tallying a 33-17 spiking gap. They also kept a relatively clean sheet with errors, giving up 22 to San Sebastian’s 30.

“I think we have a better rate in passing than in the other game on Sunday,” answered UP head coach Godfrey Okumu on what improvements he had seen coming from their loss to UST.

Hampered by a sore throat, ace winger Isa Molde tallied seven points and 10 digs to pace the Lady Maroons. Rookie middle blocker Lorie Bernardo and veteran opposite Marian Buitre each provided 10 markers.

Setter Ayel Estrañero marked eight points and 23 excellent sets.

“Adamson is a pretty solid team. They have been playing for a long time together and most of the players are experienced. I would say, we are too. And it will be a good match. Like I said, about a week ago, if you can pass well and the setters can do their jobs then it’s a game and we have to take our chance. We just gonna work on our passing and net defense,” pointed out Okumu.

Graduating captain Joyce Sta. Rita managed seven points to lead the Lady Stags’ anemic offense, while lefty Jamille Carreon added five markers.
