Perpetual notches first win at young San Sebastian’s expense

Bucking a turbulent endgame, the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA Lady Altas dispelled the rookie-laden San Sebastian College-Recoletos Lady Stags, 25-15, 25-19, 27-25, 26-24, in the Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre.

In the error-filled last two sets, the Lady StagAugust 12s’ giveaways proved most crucial. With a chance at forcing a fifth after taking a 24-23 lead in the fourth set, San Sebastian coughed up three straight errors to hand the Lady Altas the win.

Both teams ended the match with 39 errors, but the Lady Altas offense was much more productive. Aurora Tripoli topped the Las Piñas-based program with 22 points while Cindy Imbo managed 12.

“Sabi ko before, one game at a time kami. Siguro, ito na ‘yung start na medyo umangat kami,” said Perpetual head coach Michael Cariño, who admitted that the match had a special bearing since they were an NCAA rival

“‘Yun ang sinabi ko sa kanila sa training namin. ‘Yung mga NCAA teams na makakalaban natin, it’s a matter of pride ‘yan. Bago NCAA season, dapat ramdam na nila ‘yung presence niyo with them,” he stressed. “Kailangan namin ‘yung mentality na ‘yun para simula pa lang ng NCAA, medyo may slight intimidation na.”

The Lady Altas (1-2) take on FEU (3-0) on August 12 at the same venue.

Shannai Requierme led the Lady Stags with 16 points while Mary Dapol added 12.

San Sebastian (0-3) aims for their first win on August 11 when they face San Beda (0-3) also at the same venue.
