The Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws held off the College of Saint Benilde Lady Blazers to secure their first win in the Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference, 25-19, 32-30, 15-25, 24-26, 4-15, at the FilOil Flying V Centre.
Scraping to get the first two sets, the Lady Tamaraws collapsed in the third set. Gripping a 24-22 lead in the fourth frame, FEU allowed the Lady Blazers to take the next four points, three of which came off unforced errors.
By the fifth set, FEU had exhausted CSB, taking an early 8-2 lead and neever looking back.
FEU head coach George Pascua was quick to remind his players at the onsent of the fifth set to stick to their basics.
“Sinabi ko lang sa kanila na alalahanin nila ‘yung mga basics namin sa volleyball, ‘yung mga ginagawa namin sa training,” said Pascua.
Playing their first match without ace Bernadeth Pons, the UAAP Season 80 runners-up had middle blocker Celine Domingo lead the way with 14 points. Jerrili Malabanan and rookie Lycha Ebon managed 11 points each.
Marites Pablo topped the Lady Blazers with 20 points while Arianne Daguil added 18 markers.
CSB played their first match with new head coach Jerry Yee and University of the Philippines transferee Jewel Lai, who tossed 25 excellent sets.
