Petron lights up Generika-Ayala, cruises to fifth straight win

The Petron Blaze Spikers continue their dominant run in the 2018 Chooks-to-Go/Philippine Superliga Grand Prix, breezing past the Generika-Ayala Lifesavers, 25-21, 25-15, 25-21, at the Malolos Sports and Convention Center.

Petron, who settled for second place in the 2017 Grand Prix, scored their fifth straight win and secured the top spot in the rankings.

Against Generika, Petron led right from the start, wiggling past the Lifesavers with a 7-2 stretch that gave them a 21-16 lead. The Blaze Spikers kept up the pressure in the second frame, committing three errors and burying Generika-Ayala in a 20-9 hole.

By the third set, Petron uncorked a 17-8 start and allowed most of their bench players to finish off the job.

“We’ve definitely been feeling great over the past weeks with training. Everyone’s just very motivated to keep performing strong,” said Petron’s returning import and former PSL Most Valuable Player Lindsay Stalzer. “We still have a few matches to go and the goal now is to just keep this going.”

Stalzer finished with 20 points, all off attacks, while her fellow American Hillary Hurley added 18 markers.

Symone Hayden topped the Lifesavers, who remained winless in three outings, with 19 points.

Both squads have their next assignment on Saturday at the FilOio Flying V Centre. Petron (5-0) face the Foton Tornadoes (2-2), while Generika (0-3) take on the Cocolife Asset Managers (3-2).
