JRU staves off Batangas for second win

Collegiate squad Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers used a tough late game stand to hold off Team Batangas, 70-65, for its second victory in the 2017 PBA D-League Aspirants Cup, Thursday afternoon at Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

The Heavy Bombers are now winners of two in a row while Team Batangas is still looking for that elusive win.

Incoming senior Ervin Grospe stepped up for the Heavy Bombers, scattering 20 points and three rebounds in the win.

But it was Tey Teodoro who helped JRU take control in the third quarter, firing seven of his 18 markers in the period as his side grabbed an 11-point edge, 53-42.

“Just like every time, I tell my players to keep playing. Our defense today was a big improvement compared to our last game,” said JRU head coach Vergel Meneses.

Joseph Sedurifa would keep Batangas afloat as he led a furious fightback in the fourth to close in, 61-58. Unfortunately, he lost hold of the rock in the final minute as JRU milked the clock to secure the victory.

Abdoul Poutouochi anchored JRU’s defense once more grabbing nine rebounds.

Sedurifa topped Batangas with 18 points and six rebounds, while CJ Isit added 12 markers in the defeat.

JRU shot 44 percent from the field but shot just 3-of-14 from distance. Batangas was able to knock down seven triples in the game.

JRU looks to extend their win streak to three as they face AMA on February 6, Monday, 5:00 PM at JCSGO Gym in Cubao. Batangas, meanwhile, will aim to halt their skid against Victoria Sports-MLQU on Tuesday, January 31, 3:00 PM at Ynares Arena.
