Perkins, Mocon lift Cignal-San Beda in comeback win over Wangs

The Cignal-San Beda Hawkeyes had to rally back against the Wangs Basketball Couriers, 84-77, Thursday afternoon at the 2017 PBA D-League Aspirants’ Cup at Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

“Credit to Wangs. They prepared hard against us,” said coach Boyet Fernandez. “It’s a learning lesson for everyone. Every time, we have to come in and play active and match up the energy of the other team.”

Jason Perkins paced the Hawkeyes with a double-double of 19 points and 18 rebounds with three assists, while Javee Mocon added 15 markers, seven coming in the payoff period.

Wangs took control in the third period, erecting an 11-point lead, 54-43, before Mocon and Raymundo teamed up in the Hawkeyes rally late and gained the 78-75 edge in the final 2:38 thanks to a Harold Arboleda three.

Davon Potts also chipped in 12 points, while Pamboy Raymundo got all of his eight points in the fourth quarter pullaway of Cignal.

“Pamboy is the leader of this team. I’m happy that he is back with me,” Fernandez remarked about Raymundo, who played for him in the NLEX Road Warriors.

Cignal-San Beda overpowered Wangs in the paints, grabbing 56 rebounds compared to their opponents’ 47. Moreover, they were able to knock down three more triples.

Marlon Gomez anchored Wangs with 22 points and 12 rebounds, while Rey Publico had 10 makers and six boards.

Cignal-San Beda’s (2-1) next match will be versus Team Batangas (1-2) on February 13, Monday, while Wangs Basketball (1-2) will face the Racal Tile Masters (2-0) next Thursday, February 9. Both games are set at 3PM and will be held in Ynares Arena in Pasig.
