Tim Cone, arguably the greatest coach to ever grace the Philippine hard courts, is the only stabilizing presence. Not only in the whole San Miguel Group of basketball teams, but also the entire league. Almost every top-caliber team in the league, except for the Elasto Painters, has either changed coaches or is just in year 2 of the transition. Coach Tim Cone and what he did for the franchise is definitely the peg that every franchise should follow: ignoring corporate politics and keeping the players grounded.
However, after playing the full calendar for the past four conferences, this raises the 1st point of concern in the title defense of the Hotshots…
Over-fatigue and slow starts
After the team accomplished the rare grand slam last season, the question immediately raised by our friends is that when will this legendary run end? Last season the Mixers played a total of 71 games with Mark Barroca and Ian Sangalang. This does not include the pre-season games. Moreover, national team member Marc Pingris has been playing for 2 straight years non-stop.
A major cause of concern for the Hotshots is that the players are not getting any younger. James Yap will hit 33 next year (still in his physical prime though), Pingris just turned 33 the other day (still in his prime but pretty banged-up), PJ Simon’s 34, and team captain Rafi Reavis is 37. There’s no doubt that the up and coming Mark Barroca, Alex Mallari, Allein Maliksi, Justin Melton, and Ian Sangalang are just about to hit their primes but the core of the team is getting old.
This year’s rigorous schedule further stacks the deck against the defending Philippine Cup champions. During the team’s last three championships, the team formerly known as the San Mig Coffee Mixers started-off slow in the elimination round. They ended each elimination round 5th, 6th, and 4th. The team would then hit another gear in the playoffs, winning 8 do-or-die games in total. If the team starts-off slow this conference, it would be harder to pull-through in the playoffs compared to last season especially with a deck of teams hungry for the all-Filipino crown like the Barangay, the Beermen, the Tropang Texters and the Elasto Painters.
