Rhyle Melencio faces another ACL tear, out of UAAP 87

De La Salle University’s Rhyle Melencio has suffered another blow to his basketball career as he faces another anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear.

The 20-year-old, second-generation cager will be forced to miss the upcoming UAAP Season 87 Men’s Basketball tournament due to this unfortunate injury setback.

In a heartfelt social media post, Melencio opened up about his journey, expressing his resilience in the face of adversity.

“I poured my heart into reclaiming my game, battling through the pain to return to the court. Life’s journey threw me a curveball, a saga of resilience, setbacks, and relentless determination,” his post read.

This isn’t Melencio’s first encounter with such a setback.

Just a year ago, during a practice session with De La Salle University, he suffered a similar injury. That sidelined him for his rookie year during Season 86.

Reflecting on the past challenges, he recalled the moment vividly, “September 8, 2023 – left knee ACL, MCL, and Meniscus Tear marked the beginning of a chapter defined by grit, determination, and the unwavering pursuit of a dream.”

Despite facing immense hurdles, Melencio had felt determined to make a triumphant return to the court.

“For the past seven months, I poured my heart into reclaiming my game, battling through the pain to return to the court. From the depths of doubt to the triumph of state-level competition, I fought tooth and nail to reignite my passion for basketball,” he shared.

However, fate had another cruel twist in store for him.

On May 2, 2024, Melencio’s right knee ACL tore during an unfortunate incident, dashing his hopes and dreams once again.

This setback has left him facing another daunting journey of rehabilitation.

Despite the challenges ahead, Melencio remains resilient and determined.

“Yet, amidst the wreckage, I find the strength to rise, to persevere, and to redefine my journey with courage and resilience. This is not just a setback, but a testament to the indomitable spirit that fuels my drive to conquer adversity and emerge stronger than ever. The game may change, but my determination remains unwavering,” he declared.

Standing tall at 6-foot-4, Melencio posted an impressive average of 17.4 points and 14.9 rebounds per game during the UAAP Season 85 High School Boys’ Tournament.

His performances earned him a spot in the Mythical Team during his senior year at De La Salle Zobel.

As he embarks on another challenging journey of recovery, Melencio remains optimistic about the road ahead.

“Here’s to the road ahead, filled with challenges yet brimming with the promise of triumph.”
