With the National Capital Region placed under Public Health Emergency due to the on-going coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) has declared the rest of its High School tournaments cancelled.
This is due to the stringent social distancing measures being implemented from March 15 to April 14, 2020 which prohibits mass gatherings such as “sporting events and other entertainment activities”. Classes at all levels have also been suspended until April 14, 2020.
With this, the academic calendar for the high school unit of the majority of the member schools would have ended by then thus ending the sporting season.
High school events that have stopped due to the suspension are Girls’ Basketball and Beach Volleyball.
In Girls’ Basketball, Adamson University and University of Santo Tomas were supposed to face-off in a winner-take-all Game Three. The game was supposed to take place last March 6 but was indefinitely suspended.
With this, Baby Lady Falcons and Junior Growling Tigresses have been declared co-champions for the demonstration event.
On the other hand, the rest of the beach volleyball tournaments will no longer be played out.
In the girls’ side, Nazareth School of National University (5-0) and University of Santo Tomas (5-1) have already punched their ticket to the semifinals. De La Salle-Zobel sit in third with a 3-2 record, while University of the East and Adamson were tied in fourth with 2-3 records. Out of contention were Far Eastern University-Diliman (1-4) and Ateneo High School (0-5).
For the boys, UST (6-0) and FEU-D (5-1) were already locked for the semifinals. UE, Adamson, and NSNU were knotted at 3-3. DLSZ (2-4), AHS (2-4), and UPIS (0-6) were already out of the running.
