Rain or Shine favored big, Magnolia takes on Phoenix as PBA Governors’ Cup resumes

Teams looking to erase the disappointments of the previous conference begin fresh campaigns as the PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup resumes Saturday at Ynares Center II in Montalban, Rizal.

Rain or Shine opens the doubleheader against Blackwater at 5:15 PM, before Magnolia takes on Phoenix in the 7:30 PM main game.

The Elasto Painters enter the opener as heavy 11.5-point favorites over the Bossing, according to Casino Plus Sportsbook, with the game’s over/under set at 221.5 points.

Rain or Shine is coming off a semifinal finish in the Commissioner’s Cup — its deepest playoff run in recent memory — before bowing to eventual finalist Barangay Ginebra in six games.

Determined to finally break through, the Elasto Painters brought back familiar reinforcement Aaron Fuller to anchor their title bid in the season-ending conference.

The former USC standout has become one of head coach Yeng Guiao’s most trusted imports since they first teamed up with NLEX in 2017. Now on his sixth PBA stint, Fuller returns to a more seasoned Rain or Shine squad led by the continued development of Gian Mamuyac and Adrian Nocum.

Blackwater, meanwhile, opens a new chapter under head coach Pat Aquino after undergoing roster changes during the offseason.

Kib Montalbo and James Sena have been given fresh opportunities following the departure of several veterans, including Paul Zamar. Sedrick Barefield and Christian David remain the team’s focal points as the Bossing continue their transition following three seasons under former coach Jeff Cariaso.

The nightcap features two teams eager to rebound after quarterfinal exits in the Commissioner’s Cup.

Magnolia was eliminated by Meralco despite forcing a winner-take-all contest after erasing the Bolts’ twice-to-beat advantage. Phoenix, meanwhile, saw its campaign end at the hands of eventual champion Barangay Ginebra.

Casino Plus sportsbook has Phoenix listed as a 4.5-point underdog against Magnolia, with the over/under pegged at 203.0 points.

The Hotshots hope to build on the late-season surge they displayed in the previous conference. They won three straight elimination-round games before stunning Meralco in the quarterfinal opener.

Magnolia eventually fell 105-102 in overtime, despite Jerom Lastimosa delivering one of the finest performances of his young professional career.

Phoenix, meanwhile, enters the conference with a revamped backcourt after trading Evan Nelle to NLEX, one of new Road Warriors head coach Jimmy Alapag’s first major roster moves.

The Fuel Masters, however, boast an intriguing reinforcement in BJ Johnson, a former NBA player who had stints with the Sacramento Kings and Orlando Magic. He will square off against Magnolia import KJ Buffen, another NCAA Division I product looking to make an immediate impact in his PBA debut after a successful 2026 campaign in Indonesia’s IBL.
