UST takes down Adamson, ends season in fifth spot

The University of Santo Tomas (UST) played a great game as they take down Adamson University (AdU) with an avalanche score of 5-0 for their last game in this year’s UAAP Women’s Badminton tournament.

The effortless sweep started as Steffi Aquino of UST showed dominance against Clydel Pada. Pada tried to cut the lead with a mini run, however it was not enough to catch up with Aquino’s brutal hits against her in the first set, 21-19. Gaining the first set, Aquino grabbed all confidence in the court and crushed her opponent with a score of 21-12.

In the next game, Airish Macalino started slow and dropped the first set to Lady Falcon Mikaela Aquino, 16-21. Although Aquino prove mastery of the game, she was unable to prevent the supremacy of Macalino and fell in the next sets, 21-15 and 21-9.

Getting her good luck in the court, Aquino with Venice Panotes battled with Clydel Pada and Mikaela Aquino who failed to withstand the forceful attacks of the UST’s pair, 21-10 and 21-11. Kristine Gaspar and Ann Pimentel continued the hot streak of the España-based squad making the Margarita Villacorta – Christine Garin tandem surrender with a score of 21-15 and 21-14.

Veteran Patricia Barredo, showed a wise performance in her last playing year for UST against Christine Garin. Despite the Lady Falcon’s aggressiveness in the court, Barredo won by default due to Garin’s injury in the middle of the first set battle in the third’s singles game.

The Growling Tigresses finished strong but it was too late to get a spot in the semi-finals as they end their UAAP Season 78 campaign in the fifth spot, defeating three teams in the tournament.
