UST sweeps the entire UAAP 77 men’s taekwondo tournament

Icing on the cake! The University of Santo Tomas Tiger Jins crush the entire tournament with a win over the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons.

Philippine junior team member Rryel Joshua Ramirez outpointed Rannie Mercado in the flyweight contest 8-4. Rhayzor Catris locked up the UAAP Flyweight gold medal with his 8-3 victory over Juztin Castillo. Philippine junior team member, freshman Gian Francis Rubio was given a chance to hit the mats by Coach Simbao. Even though Gian Rubio would lose 16-15 to Josiah Cabanag, it was an impressive showing to the soon-to-be successor to Paul Romero. Joaquin Mendoza edged Sean Rodriguez in the featherweight match 6-5 to give UST a 3-1 lead. Karlos Gaerlan scored an upset win over Juan Miguel Ramos in sudden death to try and halt the UST sweep but it was leading rookie of the year candidate Aries Capispisan escaping Joko Silverio in the latter stages of the 2nd round with an 11-10 win and the tournament sweep for the Tiger Jins. UP Heavyweight Guillano de Dios locked the heavyweight division with an 18-6 win over national junior’s team jin Isiah Lorbez.

Coach Simbao in an interview was proud of his boys. Next year’s team would be deeper according to the good coach as the coaching staff would focus on the development of Aries Capispisan, Gian Rubio and Isiah Lorbez by letting them go through the taekwondo tournament circuit.
