UST defeats DLSU in first women’s powerhouse match up

Entering the second day of UAAP Tennis Tournament with a victory under their respective belt, both women’s squadron of DLSU and UST take to the hard courts of the Olivarez Sports Center in what could be described as the first women’s powerhouse match up of the season.

Entering the match with a desire to beat the other, both squads gave it their all to extend their victory to a streak. Sadly for the DLSU Lady Tennisters, it seems that it was simply not their day, as they fell to long time tennis rival in a close 2-3 loss.

Opening the anticipated matchup was the game between DLSU’s Rachelle de Guzman (currently ranked at 15 by PHILTA) and Macy Gonzales (ranked 10 by the same organization). The rankings seemed to have no bearing in the outcome of the powerhouse matchup as DLSU de Guzman dispatches UST Gonzales in a 6-3, 6-4 match. Her victory, however, seemed to have ushered the beginning of the end for her team’s as de Guzman eventually witnessed the fall of Jenni Dizon against UST’s Kendies Malinis 3-6, 2-6.

Joining Dizon were the doubles teams of Nikki Arandia (ranked 22 in the doubles category by PHILTA) and Princess Castillo who were brought down by UST’s Caorte and Gitalan in a 1-6, 4-6 match while the duo of Lynette Palasan and Janina Luis was brought down by the duo of UST’s Santos and Milo.

The Lasallian bleed out was, however, stopped by Marinel Rudas (ranked at 17 by PHILTA) as she stops Ingrid Gonzales in 6-0, 6-2 match.

The defeat of the DLSU Lady Tennisters cureently puts their standing at 1-1 after the win against university ADMU. The victory of UST puts them at the top with a2-0 ranking after their first day victory over UP

*PHILTA is the abbreviation of the Philippine Tennis Association
