The UE Lady Warriors held off last season’s 2nd runner up, the NU Lady Bulldogs, 3-2 in a huge upset at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium last Saturday.

The NU Lady Bulldogs started rookie Rina Vailoces as pitcher instead of sophomore Mia Macapagal in this game. Vailoces struggled in her first start of the season, giving up three runs in the 2.3 innings she pitched.

In the first inning, the first run of the game was scored by UE sophomore Josephine Francisco coming from a pitching error by the rookie pitcher. The UE lead doubled after a throwing error by Vailoces to 2nd base led to a run by 2nd base runner Charlene Quintos.

The NU coaching staff had no choice but to relieve Vailoces of pitching duties and replace her with Mia Macapagal in the 2nd inning. However, Macapagal gave up another run in the 3rd inning. Rookie Imee Salvador hit a deep fly to left field for a double that led to a run by last season’s Rookie of the Year Roxzell Niloban to put UE up 3-0.

Macapagal did not let UE score for the rest of the game. She gave up just two hits and struck-out nine batters.

The Lady Bulldogs scored their first run of the game at the bottom of the 3rd. Shaira Dadiasing scored a run from 2nd base coming from an Charslyn Tulalian RBI to cut the UE lead to just two runs.

In the final inning, a quick single homerun by Baby Gequillo, the 2nd at bat for the Lady Bulldogs this inning, gave them an opportunity to steal the game from UE. But two flyballs by Dyan Arago and Kristine Acuña to right fielder Elvie Senangote sealed the game in favor of the UE Lady Warriors.

The pitching combination of Jonavie Jerezano and Lovely Redaja again had a superb showing for the Lady Warriors. The combination gave up just four hits and struck-out 11 Lady Bulldog Batters.

The next game for the UE Lady Warriors will be on Saturday, February 7 against the De La Salle Lady Batters while the NU Lady Bulldogs will next face the DLSU Lady Batters on Wednesday, February 4. Both games will still be played at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.
