Rubilen Amit advances to 10-ball QF; Team Philippines struggles


Former two-time world champion Rubilen Amit clinched a spot in the quarterfinal round after beating Thi Ngoc Huyen of Vietnam, 7-2, in the round of 16 women’s 10-Ball Pool singles in the 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, Sunday at the Ashgabat Olympic Complex in Ashghabat, Turkmenistan.

Amit, winner of the of the World 10-Ball Championship title in 2009 and 2013, is hoping for a better finish in this quadrennial meet after she settled with a bronze in Incheon, South Korea in 2013.

“Hopefully makakuha tayo ng medal. Kung ma-match ok, kung papalarin na mahigitan pa, mas maganda. I’ll do my best,” said Amit after her encounter with Huyen at the Billiards Hall.

The 35-year-old Amit, a native of Mandaue, Cebu, is scheduled to meet Iranian Parisa Mangli in the semifinal stage Monday. Women’s 9-Ball Singles silver medalist Chezka Centeno fell to Chen Siming, 7-1, in the last 16.

Other national team participants lost their matches, including in bowling after Kenneth Chua and Jo-Mar Roland Jumapao lost to India in the men’s quarterfinal doubles.

Chua, a silver medal winner in men’s singles, finished with 224 points, while Jumapao had 182 points for a combined 406 points to India’s 418 points from Shabbir Dhankot (181) and Dhruv Sarda (237).

Chua and Jumapao earned a spot in the quarter after they finished third in their group. The other national team pair of Ivan Malig and Anton Alcazaren placed 15th in their group.

In the women’s division, Maria Liza del Rosario and Krizziah Lyn Tabora make up Team 1, while Marian Lara Posadas Marie Alexis Sy are Team 2 for the doubles meet set Sunday afternoon.

Tennis team struggles


Clarice Patrimonio and Khim Iglupas dropped their game against Ankita Raina and Prarthana Thombare of India in the quarters Saturday. The team of Iglupas and Jeson Patrombon also lost to Thombare and Jagadeesan Vishnuvardhan of India in the quarters Friday.

Renzo Cazenas falls out of the podium


Renzo Miguel Cazenas lost both his fights in the -90kg Sambo men’s category.

In the quarters, he fell to Iraj Amirkhani of Iran (9-0) and then in the Repechage (chance for bronze) to Afghanistan’s Mahmoodullhaq Mohammadi.

Alvin Lobreguito does not make traditional wrestling’s elite eight


Alvin Lobreguito, bronze medal winner in the freestyle -57kg traditional wrestling event, suffered a 10-0 defeat in to Jawed Rahimi of Iran in the final 16 freestyle -57kg.
