Micek on playing for heavyweight Petron: “It’s been all fun”

Drafted sixth overall by the league-leading Petron Blaze Spikers, former North Carolina State University Libero, Alexa Micek, is having a pleasant experience so far in the ongoing Philippine Super Liga All-Filipino Conference.

Despite undergoing a season-long transition from being a Libero to a front row attacker, coupled with adapting to the Filipino brand of volleyball, it’s still all smiles for the Fil-Am beauty.

“So far so good, I’m having a lot of fun in every game, whether I’m in the sideline, or in the court. It’s been all fun,” Micek happily told Tiebreaker Times. “It’s a huge adjustment going from defensively in the back row to the frontline, [since] there is a lot more jumping, and it’s the first line of defense.”

“So it’s been a physical adjustment, and also an adjustment in my vision. I need to be more terminal on my swings, and I think I’m getting good touches on the block, but offensively I could still do a lot more work.”

In the earlier parts of the season, Micek was sparingly used since she was still grasping the rudiments of being one of Petron’s options on offense. However, she finally got a lot more burn in their recent game against the Cignal HD Spikers last Wednesday at the San Juan Arena. With added playing time during that match, Micek managed to drop 2 points.

When asked on her assessment during that moment, Micek once again happily acclaimed, “I had a great time. I’m surrounded by very great teammates, and, fortunately in the third set, I got the opportunity to start, but I wasn’t able to finish that set, but I’m trying to take advantage every time I’m in the court and help my team be better.”

In addition, the newfound passion of the Filipinos towards volleyball eventually excites Micek as well, elevating everyone’s play to a whole new level. She also indicated that playing alongside a team consisted of former college superstars was an honor for her.

“Oh it is so much fun,” she added. “It brings volleyball to a whole other atmosphere. It’s a lot of fun of being in it and immersed in it.”

Now, with a guaranteed playoff berth to the team, Micek expects to keep her play steady, and also having fun playing together with her teammates, and give quality minutes whenever an opportunity arises.

“It’s an honor to play with these girls and I’m having a lot of fun with them,” Micek ended. “[We] just do what we do and just play our game and we’ll be fine.”

Petron’s next game will be this coming Saturday, 4:30 pm, at the Alonte Sports Arena at Biñan, Laguna.
