La Salle shoots down UE to stay unbeaten in women’s tourney

The De la Salle University Green Archers sailed to their fourth consecutive win in the UAAP Season 77 Women’s Basketball Tournament after edging the University of the East Lady Warriors, 64-58, at the Blue Eagle Gym on Sunday.

Shaking off early shooting troubles, the defending champions mounted a 15-2 run in the final eight minutes of the quarter, coming from a dismal 1-9 start in the first two minutes. After closing out the first quarter with a 16-11 lead, the Lady Archers would go on to outscore the Lady Warriors 33-23 in the second and third quarters to enter the final period with a commanding 49-34 lead.

Chery Joy Ano-os and Love Joy Sto. Domingo came alive for the Lady Warriors in the fourth quarter, helping the squad from Recto outscore the defending champions 22-15 and mount a comeback in the last three minutes that saw the Lady Archers’ fifteen-point lead cut down to eight with under a minute remaining. However, with time on Lady Archers’ side, La Salle would hold on to close out the game with the win.

Nicole Garcia led La Salle with 14 points and 8 rebounds, along with 2 assists. Trisha Piatos chipped in 10 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists off the bench. UE’s Chery Joy Ano-os led all scorers with 20 points, along with 12 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals.

The Lady Archers currently have the solo lead in the women’s basketball standings, undefeated at 4-0, while the Red Warriors drop to 1-2.
