La Salle rips UP anew, extends streak to 11


In a battle of two streaking teams, the De La Salle University showed the University of the Philippines why their Lady Archers are on another level, winning 78-52 Sunday in the UAAP Season 78 women’s basketball tournament at the Blue Eagle Gym.

The Lady Archers picked up their 11th straight win, improving to an 11-1 record overall while the Lady Maroons sank to 4-8.

It was UP’s first loss in the second round after going on a four-game winning run.

Ara Abaca and Snow Penaranda took advantage of their size against the UP frontcourt as La Salle started pulling away in the second quarter.

Back-to-back threes by Marga Dagdagan closed the first half at 39-24.

La Salle then outscored UP 24-11 in the third period to increase the gap. The Lady Archers led by as much as 72-36 before the Lady Maroons closed the fourth frame on a 17-6 run to make the score more respectable.

Abaca had an excellent all-around performance, scoring 15 points while adding 7 rebounds and 8 assists. Camille Claro contributed 15 points while five more scored at least 8 points.

La Salle led in inside points, 34-22, rebounds, 53-41, and second chance points, 17-8, showcasing the discrepancy in size against UP.

Bea Daez led the Lady Maroons with 20 points on 8-for-13 shooting and also dished out 5 assists.
