Joshua Pacio bounces back; Gina Iniong takes third straight


Team Lakay was off to a strong start to open ONE Championship: Legends of the World, as Gina Iniong and Joshua Pacio thrilled the home crowd, Friday evening at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

After an uneventful first round, “Conviction” turned up the volume in the second frame. Iniong’s second takedown in the match proved to be the start of the end for her opponent, as the Team Lakay fighter immediately gained side control. Once there, she rained on short punches on Gaol before forcing a stoppage.

Iniong went up to 6-2 and is primed for a title shot. Gaol, on the other hand, dropped to 0-2 with the loss.

In the third bout for the card, Joshua Pacio bounced back from his loss to Hayato Suzuki last August 5 with a second round stoppage of former title contender Roy Doliguez.

A spinning backfist by Pacio 38 seconds into the second round spelled the doom for Doliguez.

“First of all, I just wanna thank all the Filipino crowd here. That spinning back fist [was a counter] as he’s a southpaw and he’s showing that right hand,” the 21-year-old recalled about the finish.

Prior to that, Pacio was dominating Doliguez in the opening round, but Doliguez was saved by the bell. An eye rake by Doliguez momentarily stopped the bout midway through the frame.

Pacio went up to 13-2 with the win, while Doliguez fell to a 7-5 slate, losing four of his last five.

Chinese fighters Xuewen Peng (1-1) and Xie Chao (4-1) were able to score quick finishes to open the card, stopping Phat Soda (0-2) and Kelvin Ong (1-2) respectively.
