PSL Beach Volley: It’s Giligan’s against Foton Tornadoes in Women’s championship

Despite inclement weather pouring in the venue during the afternoon, all matches went down the books and finale of the Women’s beach volleyball is now set.

After a brief suspension due to threatening thunderstorms, Day 3 of the PSL Beach Volleyball was completed on the first day of August at the Sands SM By The Bay wherein Giligan’s and the Foton Tornadoes emerged as this year’s finalists in the women’s division.

In the first semis stint, Giligan’s was pitted against the then-undefeated Cignal HD B squad. Danika Gendrauli and Norie Jane Diaz survived a tightly-contested opening frame by two points after three deuces but Cignal’s tandem of Wensh Tiu and Rose Hingpit was able to respond and force a decider. However, the Sisig Queen’s went all out and demolished their opponents in the last set and complete a 25-23, 18-21, 15-3 win and book the first finals seat.

In the last game of the day, the two Foton teams squared up in their own semifinal bracket for the right to challenge Giligan’s in the championship. Fortunately for the Foton Tornadoes, they ended their Saturday with an undefeated record all-in-all after they defeated the Hurricanes. Patty Oriendain and Fiola Ceballos won against the duo of Bea Tan and Pau Soriano, 21-18, 21-16 to advance to the finale.

Prior to these two games, the quarters were played after the noon break wherein Cignal B defeated Meralco(Gutierrez/Brillo), 21-14, 21-18. It was also during this game wherein poor weather suspended the match for at least half an hour. However, no rain would stop the beach volleyball action as next quarters game featured the Foton Hurricane duo beating Petron XCS’s Ho and Soriano, 21-12, 19-21, 15-7.

Nearing sunset, the last quarterfinal games showcased the Tornadoes winning over Philips Gold(Fajardo/Abuel), 21-9, 21-12 and Giligan’s completing the final four with a victory over Amy’s(Cortel/Dawson), 21-14, 21-11.

The losing teams in the aforementioned bracket would then face in their classification games wherein Petron XCS defeated Philips Gold, 21-18, 21-13 while Meralco won against Amy’s, 21-17, 21-19. Earlier in the day, Petron Sprint 4T(Micek/Cayetano) took care of their own classification game against Accel Quantum Plus A(Pastor/Igay), 21-14, 21-5 and Beneco(Benitez/Madulid) rounded up the 9th-12th spot classifications with a win over Accel Quantum Plus B(Tripoli/Dela Paz), 21-8, 21-9.

All remaining classification games, including battle for third together with the championship games of the Men’s and Women’s division will be played next week at the Sands.
