Gupilan explodes for 25 as Lady Bulldogs whitewash Lady Warriors

The National University Lady Bulldogs thwarted University of the East in another lopsided affair, 80-40 as they moved closer of the Final Four spot in the UAAP Season 78 women’s basketball tournament Sunday at the Blue Eagle Gym.

The Lady Bulldogs cruised to their eighth consecutive victory in the season while the Lady Warriors were relegated to solo fourth with a 4-4 card.

Shelley Gupilan controlled the game for the Lady Bulldogs, waxing hot for a season-high 25 points including 5-for-9 from three-point area to pace the Sampaloc side.

After Cherry Ano-os scored the opening basket for the Lady Warriors, Afril Bernardino and Gupilan joined hands in a huge uprising which saw the Lady Bulldogs fire 23 straight points to end the first frame on top, 23-2.

NU then outscored UE 29-6 in the third quarter while triples by Gupilan and Sam Paig bridging the third and fourth quarters extended the already insurmountable lead to 71-27.

The Lady Warriors managed to go on an 11-4 burst to make it more respectable at 75-38 halfway in the final period.

NU used 38 UE turnovers to score 30 additional points, while its bench contributed 31 points, 27 more than UE’s measly 4 points.

The Lady Bulldogs also pounded the Lady Warriors inside the paint, having a 46-22 advantage in inside points.

UE’s woes also reflected on its field goal shooting as the Recto crew shot only 20 percent.

Love Joy Sto. Domingo led UE with 12 points and 13 boards although usual go-to players like Cherry Ano-os (6 points, 13 turnovers) and Eunique Chan (2 points, 1-for-5 field goals) were shut down.
