Giligan’s rules women’s final, overcomes Foton Tornadoes

The Giligan’s Sisig Queens came from behind to stun the Foton Tornadoes and claim supremacy in the Philippine Super Liga Beach Volleyball Challenge Cup Saturday at the Sands SM By The Bay in Manila.

The duo of Norie Jane Diaz and Danika Gendrauli dropped the opening set, 19-21 before fighting back strong to bag the final two frames, 21-14, 15-11 to rule in the women’s division of the inaugural tournament.

Teams went back and forth right in the opening set, before Fiola Ceballos took over with powerful spikes to give the Tornadoes a comfortable 19-16 advantage. But an error followed by an ace from Danika Gendrauli made it 20-19, before Ceballos scored on a hit to help Foton take the first set.

Gendrauli and Diaz however, brought the extra gear in the second frame as they bombarded Foton with attack after attack to erect a sizable 19-14 cushion, before eventually forcing a deciding third set, 21-14.

Errors hounded the Tornadoes in the final frame, as the Sisig Queens built a 14-11 lead. Gendrauli anchored the offense for Giligan’s to take home the gold medal. The duo of Fiola Ceballos and Patty Orendain, which went undefeated prior to the finals, settled for silver.

Cignal HD B cops bronze

In the battle for third, Cignal HD B’s Wensh Tiu and April Ross Hingpit swept Foton Hurricanes’ Bea Tan and Pau Soriano, 21-18, 21-18 to capture the bronze in the women’s division.

Cignal built a sizable 18-13 lead in the first set, taking advantage of Foton’s poor reception as they leaned on drop shots. Foton rallied back to pull within 18-19, but Cignal was able to put the finishing touches.

In the next set, Foton fought back from an early deficit and led, 11-10 before Cignal regained control to take a 17-14 margin. Back to back service aces from Foton made it 18-17, before spikes by Tiu and Hingpit sealed the deal for Cignal.

In other results, the Amy’s duo of Marleen Cortel and Samantha Dawson swept Philips Gold’s Aileen Abuel and Rosanne Fajardo, 21-18, 21-9 for seventh place.

Meralco’s tandem of Jusabelle Brillo and Jem Gutierrez won via default over Petron XCS’ Gretchen Ho and Charo Soriano to claim fifth place. Soriano was not able to make it to the match as she was sick.
